A Remarkable Example of Lombard Renaissance Residence

The elegant palazzo Besta of Teglio

Palazzo Besta stands as one of the most significant examples of Renaissance architecture in Lombardy. Built at the end of the 15th century as a noble residence in Valtellina, it is renowned for its rich decorative elements and extraordinary fresco cycles inspired by mythological, biblical, and historical themes.

The inner courtyard, the true heart of the palace, is framed by an elegant loggia with columns and walls frescoed with scenes from the Aeneid. On the main floor, the grand hall is decorated with episodes from Orlando Furioso, while the so-called Creation Room hosts another captivating cycle of frescoes. Also noteworthy are the studiolo with its distinctive umbrella-shaped ceiling and the Roman Room, which reveal the refined culture of the palace’s former owners.

On the ground floor is the Antiquarium Tellinum, housing important prehistoric finds including Copper Age engraved steles from the Teglio area. Among them stands out the Caven 3 stele, also known as the Mother Goddess, regarded as one of the most significant symbols related to fertility and ancestral worship.

Since 1927, Palazzo Besta has been open to the public as a state museum. Since 2015, it has been managed by the Regional Directorate of Museums Lombardy, ensuring its preservation and promotion. Visiting Palazzo Besta is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the history and Renaissance art of Valtellina, in one of the most evocative buildings across the entire Alpine region
