In the heart of Tirano, just steps from the Basilica of Madonna di Tirano, the famous Bernina Red Train departs — not just a simple link between Italy and Switzerland, but a true travel experience.
Aboard the Bernina Express, with its modern carriages equipped with large panoramic windows, you can enjoy a 360° view of unforgettable scenery: one of the most spectacular moments is right in the shadow of the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Tirano, where history and nature merge in an unforgettable sight that marks the beginning of the journey. The train then leads to the famous Brusio circular viaduct in Valposchiavo, the Palü Glacier, Piz Cambrena, and the White and Black Lakes, reaching Ospizio Bernina station at 2,253 meters above sea level — the highest point of this railway, which climbs gently without the aid of a cogwheel system.
The journey continues, and every curve reveals a new surprise: the Bernina range, with the majestic Piz Bernina rising above 4,000 meters, overlooking the Morteratsch Glacier. From there, the Engadin valley opens up, crossed by the River Inn and home to renowned destinations such as Pontresina and glamorous St. Moritz.
The Bernina Red Train runs all year round. In winter, it enchants with snow-covered landscapes; in summer, you can travel in open “cabrio-style” carriages, breathing in the fresh Alpine air to the fullest. In spring, it reveals gardens and blooming fields, sometimes touched by rare late snowfalls. Finally, in autumn, the journey becomes a living painting, with landscapes glowing in shades of orange, yellow, and red.
