Grosio: Art, History, and Archaeology in the Heart of Valtellina
The Church of San Giorgio overlooks the historic center of Grosio, amid artistic treasures and Alpine views.Located in the heart of Central Valtellina, Grosio is an alpine village full of charm, history, and breathtaking views. Inhabited since prehistoric times, it is best known for the Rupe Magna, one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Alps, with over 5,000 rock carvings dating back to the Neolithic era.
The site is part of the Rock Engravings Park (Parco delle Incisioni Rupestri), a protected area that highlights Valtellina’s prehistoric heritage through educational trails and scenic walks in nature.
On the Dosso dei Castelli, visitors can explore the evocative ruins of the Old Castle and the Visconti Castle, powerful symbols of the region’s medieval past.
Grosio also boasts a rich artistic heritage. Must-see landmarks include the Church of San Giorgio, adorned with frescoes by Renaissance painter Cipriano Valorsa, and the elegant Church of San Giuseppe with its distinctive bell tower.
Another highlight is Villa Visconti Venosta, now a museum, showcasing period furnishings, a historic library, and a beautifully preserved 17th-century garden.
Nature lovers can head to the nearby Valgrosina, a green alpine valley ideal for hiking, photography, and relaxing amidst unspoiled landscapes. Local traditions, including the 17th-century folk costume, are still celebrated during village festivals.
