Mazzo di Valtellina: Medieval Castles, Alpine Nature & Authentic Traditions
The Romanesque Baptistery of San Giovanni Battista, a true architectural jewel in the heart of Mazzo di Valtellina, serving as a gateway to the renowned Mortirolo Pass.Mazzo di Valtellina is an ancient village set in a panoramic position among fields and orchards at the foot of the Mortirolo Pass. Its streets tell the story of the territory through stone houses and carved portals, while the Church of Santo Stefano and the Baptistery of San Giovanni Battista preserve precious artworks by Cipriano Valorsa. From here, trails wind through nature, memory, and Alpine tradition.
Once the seat of one of the oldest pievi (rural parishes) in the valley, Mazzo boasts a well-preserved historic center with noble residences, carved stone portals, and important religious buildings. Among these stand out the Parish Church of Santo Stefano, dating back to the 8th century, the evocative Romanesque baptistery, and the elegant Palazzo Lavizzari — monuments that bear witness to the village’s distinguished past.
Mazzo is renowned for the Mortirolo climb, one of the most iconic stages of the Giro d’Italia, which every year attracts cyclists from all over the world. For hiking and nature enthusiasts, the village is the perfect starting point to explore the Sentiero Valtellina and the Sentiero dei Castelli, trails that lead toward Grosio and Tirano through vineyards, historic hamlets, and sweeping alpine views.
The village’s agricultural heritage remains alive and central: in local farmhouses and restaurants, you can savor Bresaola della Valtellina IGP, traditional mountain cheeses, and local wines.
Experience Mazzo di Valtellina — where history meets nature, legendary cycling, and the authentic flavors of the Lombard Alps.
