A unique journey between archaeology and nature

The archaeological park of the Grosio and grosotto rock engravings

The hills between Grosio and Grosotto guard an invaluable heritage telling the story of ancient peoples who passed through Valtellina: the Rock Engravings Park.

The heart of this archaeological site is the Rupe Magna, a large rock that, since its discovery in 1966, has revealed over 5,000 carvings depicting humans, animals, and geometric shapes—some dating back to the late Neolithic.

It stands as one of the most significant prehistoric testimonies in the entire Alpine region.
Among the engravings, you’ll find a particularly evocative figure: a man armed with a round shield and a sword-staff, whose meaning remains an intriguing mystery.
Nearby, atop the southern hill, rise two castles that further enrich the park’s historical significance: the Castle of San Faustino (or Old Castle), dating back to the 10th–11th centuries, and the Visconti Castle (or New Castle), built between 1350 and 1375 for defensive and strategic purposes.
Beyond its archaeological and historical value, the park offers a stunning natural landscape that creates a profound connection with both nature and history. The slopes of Dosso dei Castelli provide a privileged view of one of Valtellina’s most iconic agricultural traditions: the dry-stone terraced vineyards.

Before you finish your visit, be sure to admire the view from Rupe Magna—a breathtaking mountain panorama where the majestic chestnut trees surrounding the area showcase the timeless beauty of Valtellina.
