The hill south of the town once hosted the Castrum Tilii, or Castle of Teglio, of which only a few traces remain today. Among these, the Roman-origin tower—now one of the most recognizable symbols of the village—is the best preserved.
An example of medieval military architecture, it features a square plan, numerous narrow windows (arrow slits), and an elevated entrance typical of defensive structures of that era. Nestled in a pine forest, the tower is also notable for its panoramic position: thanks to recent restorations, visitors can climb to the top and access the terrace, enjoying sweeping views over the entire valley—from Mazzo to the Colma di Dazio.
The Castrum Tilii was an integral part of the Tellina Castellanza defensive system and included the Church of Santo Stefano, still visible atop the hill. The complex was visually connected to other fortified structures in the area, forming a strategic control and communication network along the Alpine routes.
