An artistic marvel at the crossroads of Italy and Switzerland

The renaissance basilica of Madonna di Tirano

Among Tirano’s artistic treasures, the Basilica of Madonna di Tirano stands out as the spiritual and cultural symbol of the entire Valtellina region. For centuries, it has been a pilgrimage destination from across Europe. In 1946, Pope Pius XII declared it the heavenly patroness of Valtellina, following miraculous events attributed to the Virgin’s intercession.

The Basilica occupies a historically significant location on the Italy-Switzerland border, where — according to tradition — the Madonna appeared to Mario Omodei on September 29, 1504. She promised the end of a devastating plague, provided a sanctuary was built at the site of the apparition. The foundation stone was laid less than six months later, on March 25, 1505, in the presence of the Bishop of Como.

This basilica is one of the most important examples of Renaissance architecture in Valtellina, a true masterpiece of elegance and spirituality. Its Latin cross plan with three naves is richly decorated, with every corner featuring exquisite stuccoes, sculptures, and artistic details.

Particularly striking is the monumental wooden organ, an extraordinary work begun in 1608 by the Brescian master Giuseppe Bulgarini and later completed by Giovanni Battista Salmoiraghi from Milan. The three carved panels decorating the organ’s parapet further enhance its artistic value, making it one of the sanctuary’s most admired symbols.
