Perched on a rocky spur at 1,800 meters above sea level, overlooking the upper Val Poschiavo, the Church of San Romerio is one of the most evocative sites in the Alps.
Blending history, faith, and nature, this millennial hermitage dominates the valley with its unmistakable profile and offers breathtaking views stretching to the mountains near Tirano.
The origins of the Church of San Romerio date back to the late 11th century, as evidenced by dendrochronological analyses and an early mention in a 1106 parchment. During the Middle Ages, the church — referred to in ancient sources as San Remigio — was closely linked to Santa Perpetua in Tirano, sharing administration and events for several centuries, until its definitive union with the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Tirano was confirmed by Pope Leo X in 1517.
The dedication of the Church of San Romerio is uncertain: it may refer to the hermit Remigio, locally known as “Romedio,” or to Remigius of Reims, the famous bishop and apostle of Gaul.
Today, the San Romerio Foundation is responsible for preserving, promoting, and enhancing this unique heritage site, ensuring its accessibility as a place of culture, spirituality, and Alpine encounter.
