A Journey of Faith, Nature, and Beauty in the Heart of Valtellina

Cammino Mariano delle Alpi

This trail combines spiritual reflection with the stunning beauty of Alpine landscapes. The Cammino Mariano delle Alpi leads you through quiet sanctuaries, charming villages, and trails immersed in nature. Designed for those who enjoy walking slowly, discovering authentic places, and finding inspiration in ancient stories, this path offers a unique kind of pilgrimage.

Launched in 2019 and still expanding, the project aims to highlight Valtellina not just as a land of nature and traditions, but also as a destination for pilgrims and seekers of peace. The route passes by the most significant Marian sanctuaries in the Sondrio province, culminating at the sacred heart of the valley: the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Tirano, declared the Heavenly Patroness of Valtellina by Pope Pius XII in 1946.

The Cammino Mariano can be walked in two main directions, both leading to Tirano:

  • Western Route: Begins in Piantedo and spans 90 km through the Lower and Central Valtellina, passing Morbegno, Sondrio, and Teglio.
  • Eastern Route (still under development): Will start in Bormio in the Upper Valtellina, covering 66 km.

Though different in paths, both share the same spirit: walking to reconnect with yourself, with nature, and with the heritage of this land. Whether you see it as a spiritual journey, a cultural voyage, or simply a way to slow down and rediscover the mountains, the Cammino Mariano offers truly authentic emotions. No technical skills are required—each stage is manageable, with opportunities to visit churches, sanctuaries, rest areas, and vineyards.

Highlight Stage: Teglio to Tirano (11 km / approx. 4 hours)

From the Church of Sant’Eufemia (850 m a.s.l.) through vineyards, backroads, and hamlets like “La Curta”, this peaceful path winds through fragrant vines and still air to reach the majestic Sanctuary of the Madonna of Tirano—Valtellina’s spiritual heart.
