The “Heroic” Vineyards of Media Valtellina
Valtellina is not only mountains, landscapes, and traditions, but also a land of fine wines, where winemaking has deep and ancient roots. Around Tirano, vineyards climb the slopes of the Rhaetian Alps, following the famous terraces that make every glass unique and create one of the most captivating Alpine landscapes.
Here, humans and nature have worked together for centuries: viticulture, defined as “heroic” due to the steep terrain, requires dedication, precision, and great passion. Each vine grows on steep slopes transformed into terraces supported by dry-stone walls, built with skill and without mortar, using only earth in some cases. This ancient technique, now recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, symbolizes the balance between human labor and the landscape.
The uniqueness of Valtellina wines lies precisely in this connection between nature and tradition: vineyards are exposed to the sun, protected from the wind, and cultivated on rocky soils that give the grapes distinctive qualities. The result is wines with bold and refined character, reflecting the history, seasons, and dedication of local winemakers.
Among the area’s highlights is the Sforzato di Valtellina DOCG (locally called “Sfursat”), a dry, full-bodied, ruby-red wine made from Nebbiolo grapes (known locally as Chiavennasca) left to dry in special lofts during winter. Alongside it, the Valtellina Superiore DOCG, produced from the best grapes grown between Berbenno and Tirano, offers complex aromas and elegance, divided into the five subzones: Maroggia, Sassella, Grumello, Inferno, and Valgella.
Valtellina also produces other fine red and white wines, perfect for pairing with traditional local dishes: from pizzoccheri to alpine cheeses, cured meats, Chisciöi, and even the region’s apples and honey.
The area around Tirano and Media Valtellina invites visitors to explore this heritage through immersive experiences: winery tours, guided tastings, vineyard lunches, or walks among the vines. A hike along the Via dei Terrazzamenti, the scenic trail connecting Tirano to Morbegno, or a drive along the Valtellina Wine Route, passing historic villages, churches, prehistoric sites, and farm wineries, is not to be missed.
Valtellina wines are not just drinks—they are stories in a bottle: testimonies of tradition, hard work, and love for the land, capable of transporting those who taste them to the heart of Valtellina, among mountains, vineyards, and timeless panoramas.
