Vervio, Bertoli, Rogorbello, Susen, Refuge and Alpe Schiazzera – return to Vervio
The route is very challenging because of its length, high elevation gain and gradients that often exceed 15 percent forcing frequent use of medium-high engine assistance. It starts in Vervio on asphalt, arrives in Rogorbello, where the road becomes steeper and climbs with many hairpin bends and touches several settlements before reaching the Susen huts. The locality stretches across a strip of meadows, from which there is a fine view of the Valtellina. The trail continues, soon becomes a steep dirt road and reaches below the rugged rocky drop that bounds the valley. You pass the parking lot and near the waterfall of the Saiento stream to reach the last short but very steep section on a mule track: those who cannot ride it must leave their mtb parked. Thus we come out on the plain of the Rifugio Schiazzera refuge made out of the renovation of the former Finance barracks. Text and photos by Federico Pollini.
