sConfini – Festival of Cultural Smuggling

sConfini – Festival of Cultural Smuggling

Now in its fifth edition, the festival dedicated to “cultural smuggling” returns, connecting the communities of Valposchiavo and Tirano from April 19 to May 2, 2026.

Program:

APRIL 19, 2:00 PM, BRUSIO
THE SONG OF TREES

A sound and poetic walk into the plant world, meeting at the Brusio Viaduct (in case of bad weather, an alternative route will be announced). An immersive experience blending nature, sound, and words. Thanks to special instruments, the electrical activity of trees is transformed into sound vibrations, giving voice to the “song” of the vegetal world. The walk, enriched with poetic interventions and ecological reflections, will be guided by Serena Visentin, Thomas Rohrer, Vilma Tognini, and Paolo Tognina.

APRIL 21, 5:30 PM, ZALENDE
ZANOLARI COFFEE ROASTERY

A journey through history, aromas, and memories of smuggling at the Fratelli Zanolari roastery in Zalende—the only one in the valley still active among those founded in that era. Amid intense fragrances and traditional gestures, the visit will guide participants in discovering a place where coffee tells stories of borders, exchanges, and inherited knowledge. An opportunity to immerse yourself in a living tradition, where coffee processing becomes a vivid narrative.

APRIL 23, 5:30 PM, BRUSIO
VISIT TO CASA BESTA

An immersive journey through stories of smuggling, traditional crafts, and local heritage, where the past comes alive through the aromas of coffee and the rich scent of wine. From testimonies of everyday life in the past, the visit leads to the discovery of a rich and surprising heritage, concluding with an aperitif that extends its flavors and atmosphere.

APRIL 25, 9:30 AM, CAVAIONE
THE SHIFTING BORDERS OF CAVAIONE

The highlight of sConfini invites participants on a unique itinerary between La Piana and Cavaione, where the landscape still echoes the footsteps of smugglers and their silent routes. The journey culminates in Cavaione, where a welcome coffee opens a moment of gathering and reflection. Historian Andrea Tognina will guide the audience through an evocative exploration of the complex and turbulent history of the definition of borders between Valposchiavo and neighboring Italy. This will be followed by a convivial lunch featuring pizzoccheri in the evocative spaces of the former school building in Cavaione. In the afternoon, between memory and storytelling, the day concludes with a screening of the documentary I furbi di Cavaione by Romana Costa, giving voice and images to a past that continues to resonate in the present.

MAY 2, TIRANO
ALPINE CULTURE FESTIVAL

For three days, Tirano will transform into a vibrant open alpine platform where sounds, stories, and knowledge intertwine. Through concerts and musical performances enlivening the squares, encounters with artisans and farmers preserving traditional crafts, workshops, and participatory activities inviting everyone to get involved, the festival becomes a place of discovery and wonder. Installations and narratives about alpine culture lead the audience on a sensory journey between tradition and creativity, turning the town into a true crossroads of communities and shared passions.
