Mazzo di Valtellina

There’s something special about Mazzo, one of the oldest parishes in Valtellina with roots back to Late Antiquity. Within the charming hamlet are religious monuments and historical stately homes going back centuries that used to be in the hands of noble families such as the Lavizzari, Vanosta and Quadrios.

Built on fertile ground, its landscape is covered with orchards, crops, meadows, and a business zone that’s home to the headquarters of some small-to-medium-sized businesses, one of which is responsible for producing Valtellina’s renowned bresaola. On the north-facing side valley amongst the Alpine meadows used for hay-making at various altitudes, the road climbs up and over the Passo del Mortirolo (1,852 metre into Valcamonica. This narrow road has taken on mythical status over the years through its many appearances in the Giro d’Italia. A gruelling climb, it’s a firm favourite for cyclists looking to test themselves.

Other must-sees include the Parish Church of Santo Stefano, which features in history books as early as 795, and the church complex of Santa Maria, consisting of three buildings from different epochs, including the medieval baptistery with an ancient baptismal font of significant historical value. The privately owned but incredibly well-preserved Torre di Pedenale tower, set slightly above the village, makes for a nice stroll and adds to the history – it was once part of a complex network of fortifications.

Perhaps one of the best ways to make the most of this spot and its welcoming climate is to set off along the traffic-free Sentiero Valtellina route or walk the Sentiero dei Castelli trail that takes in arresting local architecture and typical crops. Head towards Tirano for a fascinating glimpse of its historical and cultural sites, or go towards Grosio, an important hamlet when it comes to Valtellina’s archaeology.
